If you're looking for a Japan ski holiday that's particularly easy for families, Tomamu is well worth considering.

Located in Hokkaido, Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU combines skiing with resort-style accommodation, restaurants and a huge range of winter activities, all in one destination.

It's quite a different experience from staying somewhere like Hakuba or Niseko. Tomamu is very much a self-contained resort, which can make it an excellent choice for families, first-time visitors to Japan and anyone who wants their ski holiday to be easy once they arrive.

Why Ski Tomamu?

Tomamu offers 29 ski courses across two mountains, with terrain suitable for beginners through to advanced skiers and snowboarders.

There's a good mix of groomed skiing and powder terrain, along with dedicated areas designed to help beginners build their confidence.

One of Tomamu's biggest advantages is convenience. The ski area is directly connected to the resort hotels, so you can spend less time worrying about transport and more time enjoying your holiday.

The two main accommodation choices are Tomamu The Tower and RISONARE Tomamu.

Tomamu The Tower

Its distinctive twin towers are located right in the heart of Tomamu, making it easy to access skiing, restaurants and activities.

RISONARE Tomamu (Pictured)

RISONARE Tomamu offers spacious suite-style accommodation and is a good option if you're looking for more room or a higher level of accommodation.

Suites can accommodate families and groups, and guests have access to the wider facilities and activities throughout Tomamu.

Which property I'd recommend depends on your family size, budget and the style of accommodation you're looking for.

Is Tomamu Good for Families?

Yes!, families are one of Tomamu's real strengths.

There are dedicated beginner facilities, ski lessons and children's snow activities, making it particularly appealing if some members of the family are learning to ski.

Tomamu's Ski Debut Park is designed to help beginners learn basic skills before heading onto the main slopes, while Adventure Mountain provides a fun ski experience specifically designed for children.

And when the kids have had enough skiing for the day, there's still plenty to do.

More Than Just Skiing

This is one of the things that really sets Tomamu apart.

During winter, the resort offers a range of activities and attractions including the magical Ice Village, which appears during the coldest part of winter.

There's also Mina-Mina Beach, an enormous indoor wave pool, probably not what you'd expect to find in the middle of a Hokkaido ski resort!

You can also experience snow activities such as sledding and snowshoeing, with other activities available depending on your travel dates.

In winter, the gondola also takes you to the Terrace of Frosted Tree, where you can experience the snow-covered mountain scenery from 1,088 metres above sea level.

All of this makes Tomamu a particularly good choice when you're travelling with people who don't necessarily want to ski every day.

How to Get to Tomamu from Australia

For Australian travellers, the main gateway is New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo.

From New Chitose Airport, Tomamu can be reached by train, coach or private transfer.

By train, you'll travel from New Chitose Airport to Minami-Chitose and change for an express train to Tomamu Station. The journey can take from around 90 minutes depending on the connection.

When you arrive at Tomamu Station, the resort provides a complimentary shuttle to the hotels.

Another easy option during the winter season is an airport coach directly between New Chitose Airport and Tomamu.

By road, Tomamu is approximately 90–100 minutes from New Chitose Airport, although winter weather and road conditions can affect travel times.

When Is the Best Time to Ski Tomamu?

For the 2026–27 winter season, Tomamu currently plans to operate its ski area from 1 December 2026 to 5 April 2027, although snow and weather conditions can always affect operations.

January and February are particularly popular with Australian travellers looking for Hokkaido winter conditions.

Christmas, New Year and Australian school-holiday dates can be busy, so families needing particular room configurations should consider booking early.
