If you're thinking about a ski holiday in Canada, Whistler is one of my favourite resorts and one I’m very happy to recommend from personal experience.
Located in British Columbia, around two hours from Vancouver, Whistler Blackcomb combines two enormous mountains, a fantastic pedestrian village, excellent accommodation and skiing for a wide range of abilities.
I've skied Whistler myself and love not only the skiing, but the whole experience. It’s one of those destinations where your holiday begins the moment you arrive in the village.
Why Choose Whistler?
One of Whistler's biggest advantages is variety.
With Whistler and Blackcomb mountains to explore, there is terrain for beginners, families and intermediate skiers as well as plenty to keep advanced skiers entertained.
You can spend your days cruising groomed runs, skiing through the trees, exploring alpine terrain or simply stopping for lunch on the mountain and taking in the views.
For families or groups with different skiing abilities, that variety can make Whistler a particularly good choice.
Whistler Village
Whistler isn't only about the skiing.
The pedestrian village is one of the things I really enjoy about staying here. You'll find restaurants, bars, cafés, shops, ski hire and plenty of après-ski, with the gondolas easily accessible from the village.
There is a great atmosphere in the evenings, and you don't need a car once you're settled in.
Where Should I Stay in Whistler?
Choosing the right location can make a big difference to your holiday.
▪️ Whistler Village is ideal if you want to be right amongst the restaurants, shops and après-ski atmosphere, with easy access to the lifts.
▪️ Upper Village at the base of Blackcomb can be a little quieter while still providing excellent mountain access.
▪️ Creekside has its own gondola access and a more relaxed feel away from the centre of Whistler Village.
There are accommodation options ranging from hotel rooms and studios through to spacious apartments and luxury hotels, so I can help you find the location and style that suits your budget and the way you like to travel.
Is Whistler Good for Families?
Yes. Whistler is one of my favourite Canadian ski resorts for families.
The combination of varied skiing, ski schools, family-friendly accommodation and a village where you can easily walk to restaurants and activities makes everyday logistics much easier.
Apartments and suites with kitchens and laundry facilities can be particularly useful for families, and there are plenty of things to do away from the slopes too.
Getting to Whistler from Australia
For Australian travellers, the usual gateway is Vancouver.
From Vancouver, Whistler is approximately a two-hour journey by road, with coach and private transfer options available.
I often recommend considering a stay in Vancouver as part of the holiday. It can be a great way to break up the journey and experience another part of British Columbia before or after your time in the mountains.
When is the Best Time to Ski Whistler?
Whistler's ski season generally runs from late November into spring, although conditions vary from season to season.
The best time for you depends on what you're looking for.
Christmas and New Year are popular and busy, January can offer great winter conditions, February is a favourite period for many skiers, and March and April can bring longer days and enjoyable spring skiing.
When planning your trip, I can help you consider snow conditions, crowds, school holidays, accommodation prices and available ski deals.
What Should a Whistler Ski Package Include?
Depending on your holiday, I can arrange a Whistler ski package incorporating:
Accommodation
Lift passes
Flights from Australia
Vancouver and Whistler transfers
Ski or snowboard hire
Travel insurance
Vancouver accommodation
Additional Canada touring
Rather than simply booking each component separately, we'll look at the whole holiday and put together the combination that works best for you.
