Banff Ski Resorts

Alberta, Canada

Cathy’s Guide to Banff Ski Resorts
Banff is one of my favourite Canadian ski destinations, and it offers a very different experience from staying at a traditional ski-in/ski-out resort.

When you stay in Banff, you have three ski areas to choose from Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt Norquay all surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Canadian Rockies.

I've skied in the Banff region myself, and having three different mountains to explore is one of the things I really enjoy about a Banff ski holiday.

Banff Sunshine

Banff Sunshine is known for its high elevation, long ski season and excellent natural snow.

The terrain stretches across three mountains and offers something for a wide range of skiers and snowboarders, from gentle runs through to challenging advanced terrain.

For me, Sunshine is one of those places where the scenery is almost as memorable as the skiing.

Sunshine could suit you if you want:
  • Reliable snow and a long season

  • A good mix of terrain

  • Spectacular high-alpine scenery

  • Plenty to explore over several days

  • Skiing suitable for different ability levels

Lake Louise Ski Resort

Lake Louise is another must-ski destination when you're staying in Banff.

It's a large ski area with terrain for beginners through to advanced skiers, and the views across the Canadian Rockies are incredible.

One of the things I like about combining Lake Louise with Sunshine is that the two mountains feel quite different, so you're not simply repeating the same experience each day.

Lake Louise could suit you if you want:
  • A large variety of terrain

  • Long cruising runs

  • Beginner, intermediate and advanced skiing

  • Incredible Rocky Mountain scenery

  • A full day exploring different parts of the mountain

Mt Norquay

Mt Norquay is the closest ski area to the town of Banff.

It's smaller than Sunshine and Lake Louise, but don't overlook it. Its location makes it convenient, and it can be a great addition to a longer Banff ski holiday.

Depending on your travel dates, Norquay can also offer night skiing on selected evenings.

Norquay could suit you if you want:
  • Easy access from Banff

  • A smaller ski area

  • A relaxed ski day

  • An extra mountain to experience during your stay

Where Do You Stay?

Most of my clients choose to stay in the town of Banff and travel to the different ski areas.

That's part of what makes a Banff holiday different from Whistler.

You're staying in a genuine mountain town with a great choice of accommodation, restaurants, bars and shops, then heading out each day to whichever mountain you'd like to ski.

There are accommodation options ranging from comfortable hotels through to luxury properties, and I can help you choose the location and style that best suits your holiday.

How Do You Get to the Ski Resorts?

You don't necessarily need to hire a car.

Ski shuttle services operate between Banff and the ski areas, making it possible to stay in town and head to a different mountain depending on your plans for the day.

When I put together your Banff ski holiday, we'll look at accommodation, mountain access and transfers as part of the overall itinerary.

Which Banff Ski Resort Is Best?

The nice thing about a Banff ski holiday is that you don't have to choose just one.

I'd recommend experiencing both Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise if your itinerary allows, with Mt Norquay providing another option during a longer stay.

Which mountain you'll enjoy most will depend on your ability, snow conditions and the type of skiing you like.

Is Banff Good for Families?

Yes. Banff can work very well for families, particularly when you choose the right accommodation and plan the logistics before you arrive.

The three ski areas offer ski schools and terrain for different abilities, while Banff itself gives families plenty of choice for meals and activities away from the slopes.

If convenience is your absolute priority, we can also compare Banff with somewhere like Whistler to work out which style of ski holiday will suit your family better.

Getting to Banff from Australia

For most Australian travellers, Calgary is the gateway to Banff.

From Calgary, Banff is approximately a 90-minute to two-hour journey by road, depending on conditions and your transfer arrangements.

I can arrange your international flights and transfers so the journey into the Rockies becomes part of the overall holiday plan.
